About this pathway

## Who this pathway is for

Engineering firms at any stage — from a two-person design consultancy with a novel process to an established manufacturer developing new products, materials or production techniques. If your work involves resolving technical uncertainty, there is almost certainly a UK funding route for it.

## Step 1 — Prove the concept cheaply

**Innovate UK Analysis for Innovators (A4I)** gives engineering SMEs access to world-class measurement and analysis facilities (NPL, LGC and partner labs) at no cost to the business. Use it to validate a material, process or performance claim before you spend on development.

## Step 2 — Early-stage innovation funding

**Innovate UK Fast Start** competitions offer small grants (typically £25k–£50k) for early-stage, high-risk innovation ideas — ideal for a first funded prototype.

**Innovate UK Smart Grants** are the core UK mechanism for game-changing, commercially-focused R&D. Engineering firms are consistently among the strongest applicants because the work is genuinely innovative and evidence-led.

## Step 3 — Collaborative and manufacturing R&D

**Manufacturing Made Smarter Innovation** funds digital technology adoption and innovation in manufacturing processes.

**High Value Manufacturing Catapult** centres (such as the AMRC, MTC and NCC) provide access to industrial-scale equipment, expertise and consortium projects that individual SMEs could not reach alone.

## Step 4 — Later-stage development capital

**Innovate UK Innovation Loans** provide patient, below-market-rate loans for late-stage R&D projects with a clear route to commercialisation — useful when grant funding alone will not get you to market.

## Step 5 — Recover costs you have already spent

**R&D Tax Relief** (and the merged scheme/RDEC for larger companies) lets engineering firms reclaim a meaningful share of qualifying R&D expenditure. It runs alongside grants, not instead of them — most established engineering SMEs should be claiming annually.

## Step 6 — Scaling with aligned capital

**Innovate UK Investor Partnerships** aligns grant funding with private investment for high-growth engineering and deep-tech businesses ready to scale.

## Notes

Regional variations exist: Scottish engineering firms should also consider the Scottish Enterprise R&D Grant, Welsh firms SMART Cymru, and Northern Ireland firms Invest NI Innovation Vouchers. Engineering businesses decarbonising products or processes should review the Net Zero Pathway alongside this one.
